How do you treat a rheumatic condition? An interesting question with many answers and even more answers being developed each day. The treatment that is right for you will depend on your body, your health and what disease you are affected by.

After diagnosis, you can start taking care of yourself right away by simply eating right and ensuring that your body is getting the proper nutrition and vitamins. Nutritional therapies are a recognized treatment of many rheumatic conditions. Other easy ways to help your symptoms are with exercise and rest as well. In terms of medications, often pain relievers will help, not with treatment but with pain management. When you get to your rheumatologist, you will generally be offered options such as NSAID’s which reduce pain and swelling and include DMARD’s, biologic response modifiers, corticosteroids and hyaluronic acid substitutes. Not all will work for you and some will likely work better than others depending on your symptoms and your way of life.

From the moment you are diagnosed with a condition such as lupus, osteoarthritis or scleroderma, it is important that you find a skilled and caring rheumatologist to assist you in finding the treatment which is right for you personally. Your rheumatologist will do tests, ask you questions about your family and your medical history and then discuss your options. The best way to prevent damage to your joints and help improve your quality of life is by getting treatment right away.
