Anyone can be affected by a rheumatic condition. Currently, it is estimated that over 46 million people in the U.S. suffer from arthritis or other rheumatic conditions. Over the years, studies have shown that although anyone can be affected by a rheumatic condition, some people are more likely than others. Whether it is your lifestyle, your genetics or your age, certain factors may make you more likely to be impacted.

Despite the inability to predict exactly who is going to develop a rheumatic condition, there are certain patterns in rheumatic conditions such as:

Osteoarthritis

  • Is more common among the elderly
  •  Is increased by over 9% if you have farmed for over 10 years
  • Is more common with a family history of osteoarthritis

Gout

  • Is more common in men

Ankylosing spondylitis

  • Is more common in men

Scleroderma

  •  Is more common in women

Osteoporosis

  • Is more likely in people over 80
  • Is more common with a family history of Osteoporosis

Rheumatoid Arthritis

  • Is more likely in women – 70% affected by RA are women
  • Is more common with a family history of RA

The cause of many rheumatic conditions is unknown. Dedicated researchers around the globe continue to search for ways to cure rheumatic conditions. As new information is learned about issues such as RA, lupus and fibromyalgia, the lives of those suffering from these conditions will continue to improve. Despite a lack of cures for rheumatic conditions, new treatments and discoveries are found each day that help manage and fight the effects of these conditions. If you have been diagnosed with a rheumatic condition, don’t give up. We understand, and are here to assist you.  The Arthritis Institute of Michigan is accepting new patients. Contact us for more information on how we can help you get your life back.
