Wolverine Lake is a village in Commerce Township, Oakland County, Michigan. The village and lake got its name from Michigan’s nickname “The Wolverine State”. The scenic lake area is home to a myriad of lakefront homes built along the shoreline and surrounding property. Wolverine Lake was originally a series of marshes but in 1920 a project was created and privately funded by a local dentist, Howard Stuart. With horsepower supplied by a team of horses, a 72 foot damn was constructed raising the water levels to eight feet and thereby joining the individual marsh areas into one lake. The project was challenged by a number of lawsuits but Stuart prevailed and the land was modified, making it more suitable to build on and develop into the thriving village it is today. Stuart is considered Wolverine Lake’s founding father and there is an island in the lake that was formed in the making that is named after Stuart.
