Surprising Benefits of Vitamin D
We have all seen foods in the market that have been fortified with vitamin D, but too many of us don’t understand how this powerful nutrient can enhance and protect our health.  Vitamin D is produced by our bodies when bare skin is exposed to sunlight.  Widespread sunscreen used to prevent skin cancer and long working hours make it difficult to ensure adequate levels of vitamin D.  How do you ensure sufficient levels of vitamin D in your blood, and why doesvitamin D matter?  You can increase the amount of vitamin D in your body by expanding your diet to include fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood like salmon, shrimp, and sardines, and through egg yolks and fortified foods like milk, cereal, yogurt, and orange juice.  We should all be concerned with our vitamin D levels, because this powerful little vitamin can make a huge difference in your health.

Vitamin D is responsible for regulating the absorption of calcium and phosphorus and supporting the normal growth and development of teeth and bones.  Maintaining adequate amounts of vitamin D in your blood protects you from osteoporosis and other bone maladies, but it also plays a vital role in preventing heart disease, guarding against multiple sclerosis, diabetes, cancer, and high blood pressure.  In conjunction with calcium, vitamin D aids the stomach in metabolizing vitamins, supporting weight loss and proper immune function.  Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to depression, fatigue, tooth loss, joint pain and swelling, and diseases like cancer, gout, fibromyalgia, and Parkinson’s disease.  Raising your vitamin D levels relieves the symptoms of these ailments and protects your ongoing health, with the added benefit of elevating mood and energy levels.  If you have been experiencing bouts of depression, loss of energy, disrupted sleep, or you keep gaining weight, you may be deficient in vitamin D. Make an appointment with your doctor to have a blood test to determine whether you need more vitamin D.  If you need a physician who provides personal nutrition assessment and treatment, look to Dr. James Dowd.

Dr. James Dowd is a board-certified rheumatologist in Brighton, Michigan who has spent his career exploring the connection between vitamin D and optimum health, and the role that nutrition plays in treating patients with arthritis and other rheumatoid diseases.  In his book, “The Vitamin D Cure,” Dr. Dowd addresses the need for vitamin D and explains the connection between vitamin D deficiency and chronic disease.  With adequate dietary changes, supplementation, and nutritional counseling, Dr. Dowd has dramatically improved the lives of patients who struggle with pain and disease, restoring vitality, energy and well being.
